Uesi As

  • This was one of those rare occasions when the surf forecasts lived up to the hype. And we got to experience a decent swell event in summer. Rarer still.

With ex-tropical cyclone Uesi positioned to the south of Lord Howe Island, excitement matched by an equally high froth factor had been building all week around the potential for exceptional conditions. Up to this point, the news had been full of beach closures, major sand erosion and fears even more damage would be wrought by the remains of Uesi. The air waves quickly filled up with an endless stream of wildly unrealistic predictions amplified through all the usual channels. Could it be true or are they just pulling our collective leg-rope?

Turns out it did not suck.

My effort to wake to a pre-dawn alarm rewarded by the day delivering brilliant blue skies, golden light and the promised massive swell. Abundant waves were sculpted by decent banks then burnished to perfection by a gentle offshore breeze giving Narrabeen's infamous bowls their sublime trademark pockets.
